Members to Show at Art Access Gallery
by Cynthia Oliver
As a celebration of its re-emergence in the Utah arts scene, Utah Designer Craft Alliance has arranged for a juried exhibit of its members' works at the Art Access Gallery in Artspace on Pierpont Avenue. The exhibit, "Utah Designer Craft Alliance: The Re-Emergence of Utah Designer Craftsmen," will run from March 14th through April 13th, with the opening reception scheduled for March 16th in conjunction with the Gallery Stroll.
The work of 39 UDCA members will be on display, illustrating what juror Lenee Eller noted as "the rich and diverse talents of UDCA's membership." Ms. Eller remarked on the "wide range of styles and variety of media" to be shown in the exhibit, including glass, fiber, clay, metal, and wood. The only limitation on the size of the exhibit was space. If not for that, observed juror Martha Klein, then "I myself could have easily chosen more pieces."
According to Ms. Klein, "the quality and new directions shown in work being done by artists I have known for years is very strong and heartening to see. There were also an encouraging number of young or new-to-Utah artists whose contributions really strengthen the show."
"Utah Designer Craft Alliance: The Re-Emergence of Utah Designer Craftsmen" is a wonderful opportunity for new as well as established UDCA members to exhibit in a respected local gallery. UDCA plans to organize similar exhibits in the future to provide its members with the opportunity to display the "understanding of the medium and mastery of technique" that, according to Lenee Eller, is common to the artists participating in the exhibit.
Special thanks to jurors Lenee Eller and Martha Klein. Ms. Eller has been the curator of the Sky Harbor Art Program at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport since 1986. Martha Klein is a printmaker, who has taught in the Art Department at Utah State University and served as an officer in UDC's previous incarnation.

We had a tremedous turn-out; it was sardine-standing-room-only for Martha Klein's Gallery talk at 7:00. I have a written transcript of her
talk, for any of you who would like one.
I would like to THANK Art Access Gallery, VSA of Utah - especially director Ruth Lubbers, and education coordinator Julie Newland, for
their generous expenditure of time and resources on our behalf. We have a beautifully displayed show, in a lovely professional gallery; we have
images in most of the local press, and are expecting articles reviewing our show within the week - all of this made possible by their support of
our organization!
